US Green Card Lottery Returns: What This Means for Indians in India

The United States has recently restarted the Diversity Immigrant Visa programme, commonly known as the Green Card lottery. This program provides a chance for individuals from select countries to obtain US permanent residency through a lottery system. However, recent policy changes will not affect Indian applicants.

The US government has introduced stricter rules, including a requirement for all applicants to have a valid passport at the time of application. While these changes may impact many applicants, Indians remain unaffected because India is not eligible to participate in the Diversity Visa lottery. This exclusion is due to the high volume of Indian immigrants in the US, which disqualifies India under the program’s eligibility criteria.

The Diversity Visa programme aims to promote immigration from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. Since India is among the top countries sending immigrants to the US, Indians cannot apply for this lottery at all.

Therefore, while the Green Card lottery’s return may excite hopeful immigrants worldwide, Indian Green Card aspirants must continue exploring other visa routes.
