Elden Ring: Nightreign PC Performance Warning From Software Issues.
Elden Ring: Nightreign, developer FromSoftware has issued a performance warning to players on PC, especially those who have the most powerful graphics cards in their PCs.
Nightreign is launching next month. FromSoftware, a studio that has made painstakingly difficult but artistic masterpieces in the Soulsborne franchise, has warned players about framerate drops during moments of unexpected gameplay, even with the newest RTX 5000 series and Radeon RX 8000 GPUs.
Those near the development team have indicated that the cause of the concern is likely related to the way new GPU drivers are distinguishing and handling the game’s engine with Nightreign’s new weather feature. Nightreign’s weather and dynamic lighting were two major visual focuses in the expansion.
FromSoftware’s warning is not without merit: Players with top-of-the-line hardware may experience:
Sudden frame drops in dense areas
Screen tears even with V-Sync turned on
Frame pacing issues in boss fights or even exploration
Interestingly, testers claim that mid-tier GPUs have performed noticeably better, such as the RTX 4070 or older 6000-series AMD cards.
Industry authorities are citing a software/to-hardware desync, whereby the drivers of recent development aren’t yet optimized for FromSoftware’s proprietary engine. Other AAA developers are using Unreal or Unity. FromSoft’s engine dates back to Dark Souls III, although it has been heavily modified.
If you are going to start Nightreign on Day One, there are a few things you can do to help avoid performance issues:
Capping your framerate to 60 FPS or lower.
Do not use ultra settings until after the patches are released.
Turn off ray tracing and try out DLSS/FSR in Quality mode.
Roll back your GPU driver (this should be done with caution).
FromSoftware is promising a Day One patch, along with GPUs from the likes of NVIDIA and AMD that are already working on hotfix drivers.
Elden Ring’s PC version has struggled before. In 2022, the game had performance snags that took weeks, sometimes even months, to smooth out. Nevertheless, players persisted, and Elden Ring became a cultural phenomenon and Game of the Year.
With Nightreign, FromSoftware is even more ambitious – new regions, new storylines, new bosses, and possibly their most ambitious world-building to date. Technical issues can complicate the experience, and if they appear, they must be addressed quickly.
FromSoftware has always been a company that tightly weaves its purpose to design around how it is performed. Their stories, thematic elements, and gameplay will continue to be king, but optimizing for PC has become exceedingly difficult.
The irony that there is “too much power” is certainly not lost on fans who spent thousands of hardware rigs to be ready for this expansion.
Nightreign release from FromSoft approaches rapidly, and you will see the watchful eyes placed on FromSoft and their partners in the search of fixes, let alone their commitment to release and build updates. In the meantime, adjust your expectations, not just your settings, and remember: a few of frames like “dropped” won’t stop a Tarnished.
