Vault Dwellers Rejoice: Fallout 76 Adds Fishing and Teases Massive Building Overhaul

Bethesda’s Fallout 76, the troubled multiplayer offshoot from its decade-old post-apocalyptic franchise, has experienced a surprising second wind. In the years since its rocky launch, Fallout 76 has received updates, fixes, and enhancements, and has addressed widespread feedback from the community, and it’s now included an activity that the community has requested from the very start: fishing.

However, fishing isn’t the only thing the developers are promising because the developers aim to introduce a much bigger undertaking, a revamped CAMP and building system that they promise will change the way players influence their settlements in the wasteland.

The new fishing addition (a feature that shipped as part of the new Skyline Valley update) gives players the ability to craft a rod, locate bait, and fish in any of the lakes, rivers, and streams in the game. It has a purpose beyond the aesthetic: those fish can be cooked and provide buffs, sold to NPCs, or used as source material for future quests, achievements, etc.

Players can either engage in passive fishing for fun or actively try and catch the legendary fish that swim in the more dangerous waters, like in irradiated zones. Already, reports are surfacing about mutated fish with glowing eyes, indicating a strong possibility of future Fallout-specific tie-ins and maybe even new creatures and/or storylines.

Though fishing is a splashy (pun intended) addition, the next update could be a game-changer.

Based on internal reports and teaser patch notes, Bethesda is preparing to launch a complete redesign of the CAMP (Construction and Assembly Mobile Platform) system. The update, currently known as “Blueprints & Beyond,” will give players more freedom, complexity, and creativity than they have ever had before.

Here’s what players can expect:

  • Multi-floor support for alternate levels within CAMP with the use of their custom stair wells or elevators
  • Capability for shared CAMPs for group settlements (one of the most popular requested coop features in the game)
  • Snap-to-grid accuracy when building, to make for easier and cleaner building
  • Dynamic NPC pathing, along with settler assignment when building
  • New decor theme, along with exploration challenges tied to rare furnishings

One of the standout features is the “Modular Vault-Tec Expansion Kit”, which would allow player to build vaults from the ground up, which will be a dream come true for those who are fans of that deep Fallout lore and the underground dystopias.

While Fallout 5 is still at least a few years away, Fallout 76 is now the surprising flagship entry for the franchise, and it looks like Bethesda has embraced that role.

With updates as recent as this summer and fall, between new DLC pieces, quality-of-life improvements, and now player-requested features like fishing and additional building tools, the studio seems committed to making Fallout 76 into a full-fledged sandbox for storytelling, not just a survival game.

From disaster to salvation, the odyssey of Fallout 76 is one of the most unprecedented in modern gaming. Fishing may just be a small hook, but it reels in much larger fish: joy, imagination, and a sense of opportunity in a new, irradiated Appalachia.
