In a big announcement for strategy and roguelike fans alike, Coffee Stain Publishing, the publishing house behind games like Valheim and Deep Rock Galactic, has announced its latest project: As We Descend. The title has been developed by indie studio Box Dragon who combines deckbuilding and strategy in a post-apocalyptic world.

As We Descend introduces players to a world on the brink of destruction, as humanity’s last stronghold is an entire city in a downward motion, one rife with monstrous threats and otherworldly decay. Players take on the role of expedition forces, overcoming political nefariousness while partaking in card-based, turn-based combat with the goal of safeguarding civilization and acquiring resources. The combat system incorporates a two-zone approach, with a Guard Zone and Support Zone, strengthening the need for tactical decision-making.

The game has been developed by Box Dragon, a studio founded by industry veterans Kevin Chang and Karl Bergström (Stunlock Studios and Riot Games). Their vision was to develop a game that incorporated the classic strategy system and the replayability of roguelike deckbuilders. “We set out to create a unique combination of classic strategy game spirit within the roguelike deck-builder loop to develop an infinitely replayable experience,” said Kevin Chang, Game Director at Box Dragon.

At this time, As We Descend is in Early Access on Steam with a price of $29.99 / £26.99 / €29.99. To celebrate the Early Access launch, the game is available for 17% off at $24.89 / £22.40. Two of the original three player origins are included in the Early Access version, each uses different play styles and units. The developers have stated they will be engaging with the community regarding feedback while in this phase to help develop, enhance, and create a better experience for players.

While heavily inspired by games like Slay the Spire, and Against the Storm, As We Descend combines deckbuilding with discovery. Players manage resources, develop relationships with key characters in the city, and make choices that impact the dynamic unfolding narrative. The game is procedurally generated, with no runs being the same experience.

With its innovative mechanics and storylines, As We Descend should expect to find a place within the gaming community. There is still additional content, features, and refinements coming to the game, early access will be a unique experience for players.
