Epic Games is encountering significant challenges in its efforts to disrupt the stronghold of Apple and Google over the mobile app store market in the US. According to Steve Allison, head of Epic Games Store, the company’s initial ambitions for its new mobile app store are progressing more slowly than anticipated.

Epic Games, widely recognized for Fortnite, launched its own platform to provide an alternative to the dominant Apple App Store and Google Play. These established app stores control the vast majority of mobile app downloads and impose strict rules and fees on developers. Epic’s goal is to offer better terms for game developers and users by lowering fees and increasing freedom in app distribution.

Despite these aims, Steve Allison highlighted several issues:

  • Slower user growth than expected
  • Limited app availability compared to competitors
  • Challenges in attracting developers to the platform
  • The need to improve user experience substantially
  • Ongoing regulatory negotiations to change industry practices

Epic believes that increased competition among app stores will ultimately benefit consumers by fostering innovation and reducing costs. Their ongoing efforts emphasize the difficulty of breaking the duopoly held by Apple and Google in the mobile app market.

While progress has not been as rapid as hoped, Steve Allison remains optimistic about Epic Games Store’s future opportunities.
